winter driving

  • Dec. 27th, 2009 at 1:31 AM
Anyone having any useful tips for getting my stupid ass car in and out of my apartment parking lot after this snow fall.  It took me fifteen minutes of rocking the car back and forth this morning to get it out, and another five to get it back in after work.  While this is better then being completely and totally stuck, it's pissing me off beyond belief.  I suppose the answer is, "buy snow tires" but that's not in the budget this month, so what else can I do.  People say, "put weight in your car", "sprinkle cat litter", and "take the bus" but seriously, any help?

Block Heater Outlet Help

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 5:21 PM
The block heater outlet at my apartment usually blinks slowly when not being used or stays on when being used.
But recently it started to do a fast blinking when I plugged in.
When I tried a different cord instead, it stayed on without blinking.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows why it was blinking fast. Does that mean the other cord is broken and not working?
Thanks for any help.

German Visa

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 10:05 AM
Hi everyone,
I've looked around a bit but haven't been able to find the answer to my question so I'm hoping someone here can help me out.
My fiance is going to be working in Germany for a year while he completes his PhD and will have a work permit to do so. We are getting married at the end of June and planning on moving to Germany about a week after. Does anyone know if I will also be allowed to stay because we will be married then? Do I also need to apply for a visa? We are both Canadian citizens and are resident in Canada. I won't need to be working while I am there because I do research for a Canadian institution that can be done from anywhere.
Thanks in advance!

Winnipeg Hotels

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 11:43 PM
Hello Winnipeg,

I'm looking for a one night stay in a Winnipeg hotel. Any suggestions? Something maybe with a restaurant attached or something no more than 200 for the night. Experiences, prices, good service whatever...

Let me know what you know. Thanks!

adult onesies?

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 8:29 PM
Hi there! On a search for a gift for my boyfriend. We've had a running joke about adult onesie pyjamas. I wanted to get him some for Christmas, but have had no luck. I realize you can get them online, but I'd rather be able to try them on, etc. Does anyone know a place in Winnipeg that sells these? I've tried Zellers, Wal Mart, the Bay, etc.

Thanks! Merry Christmas!

Packing for Italy

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 1:42 PM
Hi all

I'm leaving in a week (eek) for a study abroad program in Italy. I'm working on packing for my trip and I want to minimize the amount of things I bring. So here are my questions.
1) Are skirts/dresses needed to enter a church and or museums in Italy for women? I've researched that they have signs outside of most churches saying what the dress code. I only have one dress that goes below the knee (the rest are right above the knee). It's very impractical for travelling though and I don't want to ruin the dress. Would I be further off to bring a long scarf to wrap around me as a mock skirt? I always wear long pants and long sleeved shirts anyway but I'm just worried about being denied entry because I'm wearing pants.
2) Contact lens solution. It looks like they sell the same type of contact lens solution I use but under a different brand name. I can't find an ingredient list to make sure it's the exact same though. Should I suck it up and buy 4 months worth of contact lens solution here or hope my gut instinct is right and buy it there?
3) Outerwear. I'll be in Italy from January to mid-March. We're staying close to Florence. Should I bring a raincoat and a jacket? It looks like it rains an awful lot. I mean, temperatures around 0C/32F aren't necessarily cold to me, in fact I'd probably be commenting that it's a lot like summer after suffering through -40C, but I'd like to be prepared.

Thanks in advance!

Grocery Stores Open for Christmas?

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Hello Winnipeg,

Can anyone suggest grocery stores to me, specific locations or in general, that will either definitely be closed, or definitely stay open this evening (and until what time, if you know!) and/or anytime Christmas Day? Hours for Christmas would be super appreciated too, if you know them.
I'm thinking stores like Safeway, Extra Foods, etc.

I'm asking because I need to do grocery shopping for the entirety of January (long story), and tonight, tomorrow, and boxing day morning are the only times I have access to a car. I'd feel better doing this tonight or tomorrow for obvious reasons like crazy bargain hunters and traffic on Boxing Day.

Thanks for your help!

doing a test project

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 6:15 PM
I'm looking for people that aren't good with their money...
people that are having money troubles....
people that are thinking about declaring bankruptcy or consumer proposal....
people that use to have money troubles .....
people who did declare bankruptcy or consumer proposal....

I'm a financial planner (use to be social service worker... read social worker in non-profit community agencies) and I'm looking to find people that I can help (for free) so that I can gather statistics.  I'm not keeping any names attached to the data and won't even care about male or females.  I'm looking more to prove or disprove the varying socio-theories regarding mistakes/problems that people have regarding finances.  I'm a geek... (and yes I like to stir the pot in this community when I get board) .... this is a project I'm running to propose change.  Your help, or the help of help who need help ... would be appreciated.

Serious and not so serious replies only...

Giselle's St. Vital

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Hey, what the fuck is up with that location? Are the counter girls trained to be supreme nasty bitches, or something? Or did I miss a memo saying that it's okay to be totally silent to customers at all times?

Just had a pretty crappy experience there. The only saving grace was one of the women working there, who was super awesome with my kid. But yeah, not really digging the treatment there. I thought my first bad experience was a fluke [I got a gift certificate, and again, counter clerks were just total hosebeasts], but apparently that location just thrives on nastiness.

See if I go back there, you overpriced jerks!

[Sorry if this is off-topic; I couldn't find a tag for Greece, but as it's in the EU I figured it's European in the broadest sense at least. Also, for whatever reason this post is not letting me tag it, so apologies in advance!]

I'm an American college student studying abroad in London. My host university calendar works out so that we have a one month "spring break" encompassing the entire moth of April. During this time, the one place that my friends and I all really want to go is Greece. We are planning on seeing other destinations during this time, so we are planning on spending a max of ten days throughout Greece, a lot of it in the islands.

The thing is, we will probably be a fairly large group (8+ college students aged 20-26 -- let the drama ensue!) and we rarely all agree upon what to do. Many of my friends only want to go to Greece for the beaches and to work on their tans. I love a good beach day, but I'm also pretty athletic and looking forward to going on at least one good hike or doing something more actively outdoorsy than just sitting around on the sand/pebbles/volcanic lava that makes up the shoreline. Our group also has some people who are really interested in culture, history, art, etc. while others would be fine partying every night and sleeping through a good part of the day. I'm closer to the former than the latter, though I am looking forward to exploring the local nightlife scene -- I'll just set an alarm to make sure I'm up in the morning!

With this in mind, I'm wondering if anyone has advice on the cities/islands to visit in Greece that will cater to the widest variety of traveler types? Where should we go if we're looking for beaches AND museums, great nightlife AND gorgeous nature hikes? (I would even be up for stuff more long the lines of 'adventure tourism' but I think that makes me the odd woman out among this group.) Athens is a must for me, and is most likely where we will begin and end our journey, but I also would really love to see some out-of-the-way (or just breathtakingly beautiful) islands, in particular Santorini. Also, any advice on how long to stay in a given place would be great. The plan is for this to be the more relaxing leg of the trip, for those who want it to be, so I'm figuring no less than two nights in any single destination to minimize the feeling of being too hurried.

Any other recommendations -- restaurants, hostels, local dishes to try, sights to see etc. -- are more than welcome!

Wedding/Engagement Rings

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 4:19 PM
I've found several "ethical" rings online, but I'm hoping to buy locally.
Can anybody tell me where I could find wedding/engagement rings in Winnipeg that use recycled gold, fair trade, conflict-free diamonds, etc.
Thanks!

Midwives

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 2:50 PM
Has anyone else had trouble obtaining the services of a midwife in Winnipeg? There are four places to put your name on for one, and all four of them have told me that there simply aren't enough midwives to have one assigned to me for the month around my due date.

Of course we could hire a doula, but that simply isn't the same. I was told to write to my MLA and to the WRHA because apparently up to 80% of women who want a midwife aren't able to be cared for by a midwife in the city due to the shortage of positions available. It's so sad that women don't really have much of an option regarding this in Winnipeg.
